I just came back (to US) from Tokyo (12/11~16/08). I spent 2 days (one night) in Hakone 箱根 area. Here is where I stayed: Fuji-Hakone Guest House. It is a youth hostel. I stayed in the dorm (a room for 3 people - could be anyone from anywhere) for 3800 Yen (plus tax). I was happy because I thought I had to pay ~6500 yen for a single room. My roommate was a young man from Wales (British). It really depends on your own style. I don't care anything else, as long as the place is clean and safe. I just need a place to clean up myself and fall unconcious. Another way to save $ on lodging is to find traveling companions.
